Once the administrative centre for Santorini, Pyrgos is now the most beautiful preserved village on the island. To say it’s postcard perfect is an understatement. With a medieval castle, no less than 46 churches and whitewashed cave houses set around squares draped in bougainvillea, Pyrgos is often refered to as the ‘hidden gem’ of Santorini.
It’s so laid back, tranquil and traditional that even the local cats basking in the sunshine seem to embrace the relax and recharge vibe. Tavernas and quirky shops spill onto the streets, locals play backgammon in the bars, and mesmerising views of the blue Aegean are straight ahead. You won’t find tourist traps here, nor over-development. It’s more refined, more thoughtful and simply more authentic. And those cliff plunging views are just 5 minutes away!
Location
Demeter Cave House is in the village of Pyrgos, about 5km from Santorini’s main town Fira and from its airport.
By Air:
Fly into Santorini or Athens (which has regular domestic flights to the island). It’s about 15 minutes’ drive from the airport; we can arrange private transfers from the airport, you can hire a car and there is a taxi stand.
By Boat:
From Athens’ Piraeus port, there are regular ferries and hydrofoils to Santorini; ferries take 6-8 hours, while hydrofoils take only 4-5 hours but cost more. The Cave House is 20 minutes’ drive from Santorini’s Athinios ferry port. We can arrange private transfers from the port.
